INGREDIENTS:
3/4 cup shortening 1 cup light brown sugar, packed 1 egg
1/4 cup molasses 2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves granulated sugar


1 Cream shortening and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and molasses and beat well.
2 Sift together flour, salt, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Add to shortening mixture, beating well. Gather dough in ball,wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes.
3 Tear off pieces of dough about size of walnut. Roll into ball, dust with granulated sugar and place on ungreased baking sheetabout 2 inches apart.
4 Bake at 350 degrees until somewhat set, 10 to 15 minutes. Top will be deeply cracked and center will still be somewhat soft.
5 Cool on baking sheet 5 minutes, then transfer to cooling rack to finish.
