Orange Cake

INGREDIENTS:
1-1/4 cups sugar 1 orange 1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs, well beaten 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking-soda
1 cup pitted dates, or raisins 2 cups cake flour 1 cup sour milk
1/2 teaspoon baking-powder



1 Combine 1/4 cup sugar and orange juice. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Cream 1 cup sugar with shortening. Add eggs. Sift flour, measure, and sift with baking-powder, baking-soda, and salt. Add alternately with milk to first mixture. Add dates or raisins which have been ground with orange rind. Mix until well blended. Pour into well-oiled loaf pan. Bake in moderate oven 375 F. about 45 minutes. Pour orange juice and sugar over cake before removing from pan.
