| 1/2 cup shortening | 1 cup brown sugar | 1/2 teaspoon salt |
| 2 cups flour | 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon | 1/2 teaspoon ginger |
| 1 egg | 2 tablespoons molasses | 1 cup buttermilk |
| 1 teaspoon baking soda | ||
| 1 | Cream the shortening, sugar, salt, flour and spices. Measure out one cup of this mixture; and set aside. To the remaining, add the egg beaten, the molasses, and buttermilk into which the soda has been stirred. Beat; and transfer to an oiled baking pan, making the mixture an inch deep. Spread the reserved crumb mixture over the top. Bake in a moderately hot oven, 350 to 375 degrees F. for thirty minutes. |
