Mix the flour, salt, bicarbonate of soda, and cream of tartar together in a bowl, then cut in the butter. |

Pour in the buttermilk and mix to a soft dough with a metal spatula. Turn out onto a floured surface and shape into a round-do not knead the dough. |

Place on a floured baking sheet and score a cross in the top of the loaf using a sharp knife. Sprinkle lightly with flour. |

Bake in a preheated 425 F oven for 10 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 400 F and bake for another 10 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. |
