Preheat the oven to 400 F. |

Using a small paring knife, cut incisions into the beef and stick a slice of bacon in each. Season the meat well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place the beef in a large roasting pan. Put the chopped onions around it. Sprinkle them and the roast with the paprika, cayenne, allspice, and cloves. pour about 1 cup of broth into the pan. Arrange the butter on top of the meat. |

Put the roast in the oven. After 15 minutes, baste the meat and reduce the temperature to 350 F. Cook, basting occasionally and adding more broth if needed, for a total of 2 hours (about 30 minutes per pound). |

Remove the roast to a serving platter. The sauce should be quite thick. You may want to increase its volume by adding some more broth and boiling it quickly on top of the stove. |

Serve with dumplings or potatoes and a vegetable such as cauliflower or carrots. |
