Fried Slices of Bread (Wentelteefjes)

INGREDIENTS:
2 eggs 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon rind
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups milk
16 slices stale bread 6 ounces butter confectioners' sugar



1 Beat the eggs with the sugar, lemon rind, cinnamon, and vanilla. Add the milk, slightly warmed. Arrange the slices of bread in layers in a shallow dish and pour the milk over them. Let stand for 1/2 hour. Fry the slices in the butter, but be careful that they don't break. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.
