Bread Dish with Apples (Broodschoteltje met appelen)

INGREDIENTS:
2 pounds apples 1/2 cup sugar 18 slices stale bread
6 tablespoons butter 3 teaspoons cinnamon



1 Make applesauce in the usual manner: boil or steam apples, rub through a sieve, and add the sugar. Butter the slices of bread on both sides and put them in layers with the applesauce in a greased ovenproof dish. The top layer should consist of bread. Mix the cinnamon with a little sugar, sprinkle on top, and bake in a moderate oven (325 F.) for 20 minutes.
