Hunter's Dish (Jachtschotel)

INGREDIENTS:
3 onions, sliced 3 tablespoons butter or fat 1 pound cooked chopped meat
meat drippings diluted with water to make 2 cups 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 3-4 medium-sized potatoes, mashed
4 apples, peeled and sliced very thin 1 tablespoon bread crumbs



1 Saute the onions in 2 tablespoons butter. Add the meat, liquid, and spices. Mix well. Fill a greased oven-proof dish with alternate layers of mashed potatoes, the meat-and-onion mixture, and a layer of apple slices. The top layer should be potatoes. Dot with the rest of the butter and sprinkle with bread crumbs. Bake in moderate oven (350 F.) for 1/2 hour.
