Stir macaroni into a big pan of boiling salted water; cook, stirring often, just until tender; drain. |

Spoon macaroni into an 8-cup baking dish. Make sauce. Blend onion, butter or margarine, flour, seasonings, milk and cheese in a saucepan. Cook, stirring constantly until sauce thickens and boils 1 minute. Pour over macaroni, then mix in. |

Sprinkle buttered bread crumbs in a ring on top. (To fix, crumble 2 slices bread; toss with 1 tablespoon melted butter or margarine.) Bake in moderate oven (350 F) 30 minutes, or until center is bubbly-hot and crumbs are toasty-golden. |
