| 2 cups beans | 5 cups water | 1/2 tsp garlic powder |
| salt to taste | 1 small onion | 1 tsp sugar (brown) |
| 6 slices bacon, cut up or 1/2 cup salt pork | 1/2 tsp each: cominos and oregano | |
| 1 | Beans should be washed and let soak 4 hours or more. Overnight soaking is better. Cook over a slow heat with all ingredients except the salt. Add the salt the last 15 minutes prior to serving. |
