Apple Oatmeal Bars

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon soda
1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup shortening
2-1/2 cups sliced apples 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup granulated sugar



1 Sift flour.
2 Measure and add salt, soda, and brown sugar.
3 Sift again.
4 Add oatmeal flakes.
5 Cut shortening into mixture until it is crumbly.
6 Spread 1/2 of mixture in a greased baking pan 7x10 inches.
7 Arrange sliced apples over crumb mixture.
8 Dot with butter and sprinkle with granulated sugar. Cover with remaining crumbs.
9 Bake at 350 F. for 40 minutes. Cut in squares or bars while still warm.
