Mix ashes with 1-1/2 cups of boiling water and set aside. |

Combine cornmeal and sugar in a large mixing bowl. |

Add 4 cups of boiling water and stir until blended. |

Strain ash water through a cloth. |

Add about 1 cup of ash water to cornmeal mixture, until it turns distinctly blue in color. |

Knead dough until ash water is mixed in well. (Dough will be very thick.) |

Wrap 2 tablespoons of dough in each corn leaf, securing with additional corn leaves as necessary. |

Drop leaf-wrapped dough into a large pot of boiling water. Cover and simmer for thirty minutes. |
