Soak the beans or peas of your choice in enough cold water to cover for 2 hour. Rinse them thoroughly under cold water. Put them in a large pan with water and salt. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. |

Add the lentils, plantains, potatoes, corn kernels, and a little more water if necessary. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil and simmer slowly until all the vegetables are soft and cooked. Drain off any excess water. |

In a very large bowl, mash all the boiled vegetables and the butter together as smoothly as possible. For variation, you can mash in any spice or herb seasoning, any cooked fish or meat, or even another vegetable such as pumpkin. |
